According to Bloomberg information , Apple says it plans to discontinue the iPhone fingerprint reader in favor of face unlock technology. It is replacing fingerprint with 3D sensor technology for face recognition on its coming iPhone series.
The change, if confirmed, will mark a major change in Touch ID, one of the most traditional features of Apple’s mobile phones since the introduction of the iPhone 5S in late 2013.
“It will be powered by a new 3D sensor that is still in development,” said anonymous sources. The company is also testing an eye scanner to improve the system, “the publication said.
The functionality is different from the Galaxy S8 that is able to recognize the iris of the users. However, to function properly, it requires users to position their eyes at the indicated locations.
Face unlock
Facial recognition is not something new in smartphones. Android itself offers the feature since version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and was released in conjunction with the Galaxy Nexus device, in the distant year of 2012.
Due to the possibility of unlocking through using someone else’s PHOTOS and the inability to analyze faces in dimly lit environments, facial unlock mode has never gained popularity than fingerprint. But lets hope the 3D Sensor will never do any mistakes to recognize real human face.
